As you probably know, elementary OS ships with a tweaked GNOME environment. So as far as file browsing goes, we're looking at Nautilus to serve our needs. And unfortunately, looking at Nautilus leads to a lot of questions like,  "What the hell was that guy smoking when he wrote that." So, being the person I am, I set out to find a solution. A lot of us did. And we found it in Marcus Carlson's nice little patched Nautilus. But, now that's no longer maintained. *tear*

So, what better project to take over its development than elementary itself? None other! If you're using our desktop PPA you should notice a spiffy new Nautilus in your next update. Its based on 2.28.4 so its newer than the one in the Karmic repos. Awesome changes include: A single toolbar, the ability to hide the menubar, and many more to come.

If you don't have the elementary desktop PPA you need to go get it! We provide lots of great up to date and fixed packages.

Inspect the PPA here: [link]

Add it with this command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementaryart/elementarydesktop

Please note that this ppa *WILL* change some of your system packages. check whats in the ppa and make sure you want the changes before you add it. I'm not responsible for anything that happens to your computer if you add this ppa without checking its contents!

Do I need to remove eye of GNOME to get the gloobus preview working right?

No. You just need either elementary nautilus or gloobus nautilus. Something that I do personally is set my default image viewer to gloobus preview, but otherwise just use space to open in gloobus preview.

I think what I did wrong was simply updating rather than installing the elementary-desktop metafile.

I like the changes to the interface, and even did some tweaking based on a GTK theme that was based on your mockup. Not sure I'm a fan of gloobus-preview, for now, though, but I see why it's getting good attention.

There's one thing though: why install Zeitgeist if it's not being used at the moment? Or am I missing something again?

gloobus preview rocks :) We've made a LOT of enhancements that haven't hit the ppa yet.

As time goes on, more and more applications will take advantage of zeitgeist. For now, Docky does use it ;)

That would explain why I haven't seen any interaction between the file manager and Zeitgeist.

Can't wait to see what else you guys cook up.

Oh yes, hopefully we will get some cool stuff going on. The problem is that we only have one person coding on Nautilus right now!

Wish I could help. So far, I only edited the Nautilus UI XML file to remove the stop button (which I pretty much deemed unnecessary) and was hoping to find a quick way to add a compact menu. Unfortunately, it appears I haven't dug deep enough to find out how to do so. I was also looking at removing the drop arrows, making Nautilus closer to a modern web browser instead of the clunky thing it currently is.

I don't know if you've seen my nautilus mockup, but a couple things we were exploring were moving the stop/reload button inside the pathbar (saving lots of space in the toolbar) and adding a compact menu ;)

Also, We're looking at doing a click-n-hold behvior to expose the forward/back history menus like Google's Chrome.

Incidentally, if you want to check what my current desktop looks like:

Is there a way to pick and choose which elements of the PPA get installed? I don't want to mess with Firefox or Banshee, but I love your version of nautilus. Some of the other things (docky?) I'm not sure about either.
