Hmm.. PNG can has compression :) though dA resizes pngs with zero compression anyway, so jpegs are easier to deal with.

Why can't you believe you switched to Ubuntu? I can't believe how awesome a community project could get.

You'll start believing you're immune to gravity and stuff.
Thats what I mean. I always thought it was totally locked down and it would be a big pain in my ass and I wouldn't be able to use it like regular Linux. But I found out its just as powerful as my Gentoo installation was. (maybe not quite as fast though)
this looks a lot like gOS. i think its to bland. Add something that draws attention. I think your confusing minimalism with simplicity.

why would I want to draw attention??

my attention should be on whatever application I'm working on.

Also, I believe gOS uses GNOME. which, SURPRISE!, is the desktop I use.

No offense, but theres a reason nobody uses red as a part of their system theme.
no gOS uses enlightenment17. they're working on gnome. if theres a reason no one uses red, then by all means tell me what that reason is and why david lanham's amora has been among the most popular gui mods since 2006. I consider it pretty avant-garde.

Your really not making a huge functionality change to gnome, so the appeal is in the aesthetic aspect. People use alternative guis primarily to give their desktop a more aesthetically pleasing and vivid appearance. I just think it needs to be more eye-grabbing.

Um.. this is a screenshot of my desktop right now..

I don't really know what you expect, lol.

and I was talking commercial desktop.
Mac OS, Windblows, KDE, GNOME, XFCE. big desktops that come in soft colors.
one of the main reasons people actually buy vista is because of how vivid yet simple the gui is.
