Deviousness |
I think the close button should return to where it belongs, the top right corner of the window. When Apple did this with their Mac App Store I was furious! Please don't repeat the same mistakes they did. And if you want to be specific, the mistake is: thinking up and writing detailed UI guidlines and then forgetting them for a couple apps without a purpose, but just for the sake of it. Making such mistakes would, in time, encourage other app developers to follow your "special rules" and sooner than you think, the guidelines you thought and wrote up in detail would all be a joke. Stop it when it matters!
Also, maybe you can do something about the drop-downs? I'm not sure what all widgets your UI engine supports but some combining with the central desktop preview should do the trick!
Also, there is less horizontal padding on the close button than vertical padding, making the close button look grouped with the "Settings" button.
One thing I have to say is I've always found this layout a bit old school. Is there no way the desktop and hot corner example in the middle can be used interactively? Maybe when you hover on a corner a little example of what you've chosen plays out. Maybe you can right click a corner and a drop down menu appears to make your choice with. Just thinking out loud
