I don't understand this sentence "few kernels have that much file compatibility"

that doesn't make sense.

the kernel by itself really doesn't deal with too many files, that I know of.

And I use Linux because of its expandability. I can do whatever I want to or with it.

The kernel really doesn't mean much without BASH at least. then we have projects like GNOME, Open-Office, Firefox, Elementary. These are the things that make Linux worth switching to in my opinion.

the only reason people use an open source OS as widely as linux is because of how amazing it is. Few kernels have that much file compatibility, its become the standard.

Linux is different. It uses an evolution type model where anarchy is the only rule. In this way, Torvalds is only a piece of the puzzle. The kernel is quite a large piece, but its not one that I care enough to know a lot about. So to answer your question: I have no idea. lol

i suppose your right, because Jobs is an innovator and Gates is not, and innovators are artists. I thought you were a linux user though.

So is Linus Torvalds an artist?

naw, look at Microsoft. Would you really call Windows a work of art? nooooo....

I consider organization an art :)

do you consider bill gates an artist because hes a ceo? does that mean every ceo is an artist? does that mean everyone is an artist? Jobs is good at comp-sci, and hes good at organizing people, but he cant visually express himself, and he has no talent in doing so. In my book, being an artist means having the ability to express oneself and having the feeling to do so with, regardless of context.

yea, but you're missing the big picture. Thats just a piece of the puzzle. It takes someone to put all the pieces together.

This is qute a complex issue, lol. I believe it would probably be better for an essay prompt than a short answer. However, to sum it, I believe that Jobs has a gift for seeing the potential in a thing.

At the time that Apple started up, everyone laughed at the idea of a personal computer. Who would ever need a computer at home?

With this, Jobs took a market that was very very small and made it huge. And I consider this an art.

Also, look at the products that come out of Cupertino. They are all works of functional art. When Jobs came back to Apple after working on NEXT, he complained that Apple had removed all "the sex" from their products. And, I believe this is a philosophy that more people should take. Why does a product have to be ugly? Why can't it be functional and great looking?

Now, I'm not saying that Jobs is solely responsible for all of this. But he's picky and persuasive enough to make it come to pass. And that is why I believe he's such an irreplaceable figure in the tech industry.

With elementary, I want to take that Cupertino mindset and bring it to Linux. I want to put "the sex" into the free desktop.

Like Steve Jobs said when he released the first revision of OS X, "one of the design goals was to make you want to lick the buttons off the screen."

Not sure I am going to be really realllly busy with helping my parents on the ranch this weekend so I'm afraid I won't get much done as far as elementary.

Thanks! Could you post a set color scheme as a .gpl file (gimp/inkscape pallet)?

--
void main()
{
char I[7];
I = "GIMP Master";
cout << I;
return;
}
~DanRabbit:iconDanRabbit: Apr 30, 2008, 10:46:09 AM
alright, I'll get to work on that.

color scheme is a mix of tango, gnome, os x, and photographic references.

Love your icon set. I was wondering if you would be willing post a short tutorial on how to make a couple elementryicons in Inkscape. Mabey a folder, a hard disk, and an arrow, just to get a feel for each icon type and what is needed to make them.

PS: What color scheme are you using?

void main()
{
char I[7];
I = "GIMP Master";
cout << I;
return;
}

feel free. GPL means go for it!

If you can do elementary better than I can, by all means do it! The community is more important than the individual, you know?

minux was actually a smash-up of the words mac and linux, lol. basically it was to be my interpretation of OS X. But now I'm mixing all different styles and trying to make something that will look good for everyone.

3? firefox? beta? you crazy!

i don't for sure, but I might just have to change one number in the firefox theme to get it to work in beta...

i'd love to join the elementary artist team! :giggle:
