that doesn't make sense.
the kernel by itself really doesn't deal with too many files, that I know of.
And I use Linux because of its expandability. I can do whatever I want to or with it.
The kernel really doesn't mean much without BASH at least. then we have projects like GNOME, Open-Office, Firefox, Elementary. These are the things that make Linux worth switching to in my opinion.

At the time that Apple started up, everyone laughed at the idea of a personal computer. Who would ever need a computer at home?
With this, Jobs took a market that was very very small and made it huge. And I consider this an art.
Also, look at the products that come out of Cupertino. They are all works of functional art. When Jobs came back to Apple after working on NEXT, he complained that Apple had removed all "the sex" from their products. And, I believe this is a philosophy that more people should take. Why does a product have to be ugly? Why can't it be functional and great looking?
Now, I'm not saying that Jobs is solely responsible for all of this. But he's picky and persuasive enough to make it come to pass. And that is why I believe he's such an irreplaceable figure in the tech industry.
With elementary, I want to take that Cupertino mindset and bring it to Linux. I want to put "the sex" into the free desktop.
Like Steve Jobs said when he released the first revision of OS X, "one of the design goals was to make you want to lick the buttons off the screen."

If you can do elementary better than I can, by all means do it! The community is more important than the individual, you know?
